As 2010 begins, let’s take a moment to reflect on the main things that have been accomplished in 2009:

*We met the author of Master ASL!, Jason Zinza, on February 21, to get a brief overview of National Standards and Professionalism.

*WisASLTA members volunteered and presented for ASL weekend on May 1-3.

*Jason Zinza returned on August 10 - 13 for a Master ASL! curriculum training. This was the first time WisASLTA offered scholarships for new ASL teachers.

*WisASLTA President Stefanie Saltern and Professional Development Chair Kristin Scheibe attended Chapter Luncheon at the ASLTA conference on October 30.

As Jason Zinza taught us, “A professional educator is one who looks for opportunities to connect with other professionals”, WisASLTA provides you this opportunity statewide, we encourage you to take advantage of it in 2010 and beyond. Listed are suggested goals for 2010:

*Write letters of request to your legislators to call a Senate committee hearing session on the interpreter licensure bill. For more information and sample letters, contact Joel Mankowski at mankowj@uwm.edu.

*Attend Professional Development workshops through the year. Current Winter schedule: WAFLT workshop at UW-Milwaukee on Feb. 13 (see http://www.waflt.org/), WisASLTA workshop at Delavan on Feb. 20 (rescheduled from Nov. 21), and FLESFest on March 13.

*Obtain ASLTA certification, for application at different levels see http://www.aslta.org/.

*Volunteer several hours of your time to organizations in the Deaf community.

*Support ASL Weekend on April 30 - May 2, http://www.wisdeaf.org/wp/2009/11/24/asl-weekend-save-the-date/.

*Inform members of your community about WisASLTA and our events.

Let’s be unified to make 2010 the best year ever!!

Respectfully,
Stefanie Saltern,
WisASLTA President 2007-2011
